Known as the "oldest living organisms" the bristlecone pines reflect in their contorted shapes the influence of wind, snow and rain in this often harsh climate. Often, a tree as old as four thousand years hangs on to its existence with a single root that draws sustenance from the dolomite soil. It's tempting to imagine human faces or animal shapes in these hardy survivors.
